Anselm on St. Matthew 9:13 (St. Matthew, Apostle)

by steeh ~ September 16th, 2008

In 9:13, Jesus quotes Hosea 6:6 against the Pharisees, saying “Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Anselm: “Yet does not God condemn sacrifice, but sacrifice without mercy. But the Pharisees often offered sacrifices in the temple that they might seem to men to be righteous, but did not practice the deeds of mercy by which true righteousness is proved.”   … “I came not to call the righteous,” that is, the feignedly righteous, those who boasted of their righteousness as the Pharisees, but those that owned themselves sinners.”
