Food and dependency

I don’t always agree with him, but Stanley Hauerwas’s Matthew commentary in the Brazos series is always thought-provoking. Here he comments on the temptation of Jesus after His forty-day fast:

“The devil … thinking that Jesus’s (sic) fast might have weakened him, approaches Jesus just as he approached Eve. Eating may be the devil’s first line of attack because eating gets to the heart of our dependency–a dependency we try to deny.” (p52)
