Gerhard on Trinity 19 – Matthew 9:1-8

by pastorjuhl ~ October 4th, 2010

When people do not wish to accept Christ’s Word and discount it, it is Christ’s custom to go elsewhere. If you do not wish to have Him dwell in your heart or to receive His words in your heart, He will withdraw His grace.

When in prayer we bring our need before Christ, we should do so without any preconditions on what He is to do, but we should leave everything up to Him. And although we do not always pray outwardly, our hearts call out with inward sighing and yearning to God, just like the paralytic and his bearers here give witness.

Christ begins His healing with the forgiveness of sins to teach that He does not heal the sick in order to be praised as an outstanding physician but, by the outward healing, to reveal Himself as the inward Physician of the souls He wishes to rescue from sin. He also wishes to teach that sickness and all misfortune stem from sin and to remind us of our transgressions. Thus, Christ first forgave the man his sins so that his healing would be complete.
