Sermon for the Vigil

by Christopher Esget ~ April 23rd, 2011

Rejoice this night, O Christians! For you were slaves, but for your ransom God gave His Son!

Rejoice, Whitney, for on this holy night all your sins are washed away!

Rejoice, Whitney, and Lee, and Anne Hayes, and Kevin, for this night the bounty of the Lord’s Table is opened to you!

Rejoice, all you whose innocence has been lost, for tonight in Christ it is restored!

Rejoice, all you who have been downcast, for tonight our Lord invites you to share His joy!

For this is the night when Christ, the Life, arose from the dead!

Rejoice, for God has remembered you sons and daughters of Adam, into whom He breathed the breath of life in the beginning.

Rejoice, you sons and daughters of Noah, for He who once destroyed the world in the waters of the flood, yet saved eight souls alive in the ark, has invited you into His holy ark, the Church. And as the flood was a type, so God has now given us the antitype, Baptism, which now saves you.

Rejoice, you spiritual sons and daughters of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, for as God brought His Israel through the waters of the Red Sea and gave them salvation, so now in this blessed Sacrament the waters have again been parted, and He has given salvation to His daughter Whitney.

Rejoice, you have squandered your lives, for tonight the Lord invites you to come to His table, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Rejoice, O you who have been baptized, for God has given you a new heart and a new spirit!

Rejoice, O you children of dust, for God can bring even dry bones to life!

Rejoice, O you condemned to death, for the Son of Man who rescued three young men from the fiery furnace will rescue you from your own fiery trials.

Rejoice, you who have been raised with Christ, and seek those things which are above. For tonight you have died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

O you sinners, rejoice and be glad, for this is the night when our Passover was accomplished, and as the Blood of the true Passover Lamb is poured on the door of your lips, let your faith point to it, and death will pass over you. +INJ+
