It’s called “eschatology,” i.e., the study of the last things. On the individual level, eschatology focuses on what it means for the Christian to die a good death. On the group level, eschatology rivets our attention on Jesus’ second coming on the clouds of heaven. Today’s Gospel lesson presents a picture of the latter, Jesus’ final advent to judge the quick and the dead.
