Christus Factus est: Sermon for Maundy Thursday
The propers for Holy Week are rich in grace. There is a full set of propers (lessons, Introit, Gradual, etc.) for every day in Holy Week. They lead us to the cross and empty tomb in repentance and faith. Three of tonight’s propers for Maundy Thursday will guide our meditation this evening. The gradual, known in Latin as Christus Factus est (Christ was made obedient), traces the humiliation and exaltation of Christ. Our Epistle gives us the words instituting the Sacrament. And our Gospel lesson describes Jesus’ servitude on the night He was betrayed. A rich portrait of the life and work of Christ, the One who was made obedient unto death, even death on the cross. Sermon for Palmarum (Lent VI)
Today’s Gospel is the only Gospel lesson appointed for two Sundays in the church year. It is the portal of the church year (Advent I), where we welcome Jesus with shouts of “Hosanna” and “Blessed is he.” And it is also the Gospel lesson for this, the first day of Holy Week, when we anticipate the shouts of “Crucify Him! Sermon for Lent V (Judica)
You’ve probably heard of Christ’s threefold office of Prophet, Priest, and King. These three facets of the person and work of Christ shape this portion of the church year. Last Sunday, Lent IV (Jn 6:1-15), the crowds identified Jesus as “the prophet” who had come into the world (Jn 6:14). Today, our Epistle preaches His work as our High Priest (Heb 9:11-15). Next Sunday, Palm Sunday, will present Him as our King who comes to save us (Matt. 21:1-9). I would like to focus on two aspects of Christ’s role as our High Priest this morning: (1) the blood of the atonement and (2) the bread of His presence. Continue reading
